The immigration medical exam is one of the most stressful steps in the green card process, not because it is difficult, but because a missing document or incomplete vaccine record can delay an application by months. A little preparation prevents almost all of it.
USCIS requires most green card applicants to complete a medical examination documented on Form I-693 and performed by an authorized physician. The exam confirms that you do not have health conditions that would make you inadmissible and that your vaccinations meet U.S. requirements.
It is not a trick, and it is not a full physical. It is a structured screening with specific required components.
The exam usually includes a review of your medical history, a physical examination, screening for tuberculosis, blood tests for certain communicable conditions, and a review of your vaccination records against the required list.
The physician then completes and seals Form I-693. Do not open the sealed envelope. USCIS requires it sealed, and an opened envelope often means redoing paperwork.
Bring a government-issued photo ID, ideally a passport, your vaccination records translated into English if needed, any medical records for chronic conditions or past treatments, a list of current medications, and your Form I-693 if your attorney already provided one.
The most common cause of delay is incomplete vaccine documentation. If you cannot locate childhood records, come in anyway. Blood tests can verify immunity for some diseases, and missing vaccines can be given at the visit.
Answer every question truthfully, including questions about medical history and past substance use. Honest answers with proper documentation resolve far better than inconsistencies discovered later in the immigration process.
