Weight is an equation with two sides. This practical guide explains why food and movement need to work together and when medical evaluation helps.
Every January, the same two camps form: people who overhaul their diet but never move, and people who exercise furiously while eating exactly as before. By March, both camps are frustrated. Here's the truth we share with patients at our Doraville clinic every week: weight is an equation with two sides, and ignoring either one is why most attempts fail.
You can out-eat any workout. A 30-minute jog burns roughly the calories in one bagel with cream cheese. That doesn't mean exercise is pointless. It is essential for your heart, mood, sleep, blood sugar, and long-term weight maintenance. It means exercise alone rarely produces weight loss if eating habits do not change alongside it.
The reverse mistake is just as common: dieting without movement loses muscle along with fat, which slows your metabolism and sets up the rebound.
You do not need to count every calorie forever. But most people genuinely do not know how much they eat, and studies consistently show we underestimate our intake. Try this for one week: write down everything you eat and drink, honestly, with rough portions. No judgment, just data.
Most patients find two or three leaks they never noticed, such as sweetened coffee drinks, handfuls while cooking, or portions that quietly grew over the years.
Then, instead of eliminating entire food groups, work on variety and proportion: more vegetables, fruits, lean protein, and whole grains, with smaller portions of the rest. Cutting out carbs entirely is not sustainable for most people, and severely restrictive plans often cut out nutrients too.
For general health, adults need about 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, which can be as simple as a brisk 30-minute walk five days a week, plus muscle-strengthening activity twice weekly. Adults over 65 should add balance work, like standing on one foot. Kids and teens need a full 60 minutes daily.
If you are starting from zero, do not start at 150. Start at ten minutes a day and build. The best exercise is the one you will still be doing in six months.
Sometimes weight resists even honest effort, and there are real medical reasons why. Aging shifts body composition toward fat and slows metabolism. Poor sleep disrupts hunger hormones. Conditions like hypothyroidism and PCOS, and medications including steroids and some antidepressants, can drive weight gain directly.
That is exactly when a medical evaluation earns its keep. At Lenox Medical Clinic, we check thyroid function, blood sugar, and other metabolic markers with on-site labs, review your medications, and rule out the hidden reasons the scale will not move.
